Over time
Your jewellery will develop its own patina depending on how you use and store it, and subtle changes to its appearance will happen. It will become very personal to you, I see this almost as a subtle record of your life with the piece.
I have my Grandma’s signet ring, I love all the signs of wear, the places where it has worn thin because she wore other rings next to it. She has long since passed away but her ring helps me feel close to her.
I feel that jewellery improves with wear; More porous materials such as mother of pearl will absorb oils from your skin and environment, over time the colour will deepen and become richer. This is one of the reasons I love MOP so much.
To keep your jewellery in general good condition I recommend the following:
General Care
Some stones, particularly pearls, can be sensitive to heat, strong chemicals, cleaning products, and perfumes. Therefore, we recommend removing your jewellery before applying perfume, showering, sunbathing, swimming, or cleaning.
We also advise against wearing jewellery on the beach, as sand can damage the surface of both stones and metal.
Additionally, we recommend not wearing jewellery while exercising or sleeping.
Cleaning
Most jewellery items can be cleaned using a mild solution of warm water and washing-up liquid. Soak the item for a few minutes and gently brush it with a soft toothbrush to remove grease and ingrained dirt. Wipe dry with a soft, clean cloth.
Softer, more porous materials such as pearls, opals, and emeralds should be wiped clean with a damp cloth only.
If in doubt, please contact us for advice.
Storing
We recommend storing and transporting your jewellery in its original box, or using a purpose-designed jewellery roll when travelling. Avoid stacking items on top of each other, as this can damage surface finishes and delicate materials.
Strung pearls should be kept rolled in a soft cloth. The thread should be checked periodically for signs of wear and replaced if necessary.
